Thomas Queen and his wife, Michelle, knew each other from an early age. They started dating around the time Thomas began to have neurological episodes. Now, decades later, the couple has fought through multiple sclerosis and cancer treatments their whole married life, often staying at the D.C. Fisher House. The family talks about Thomas’s military service and the VA doctor who made the diagnosis that changed their lives.

Fisher House Foundation and the Department of Veterans Affairs are on track to open six new Fisher Houses across the U.S. in 2020, allowing more than 100 more families to stay in safe, comfortable lodging for free on any given night while their loved one undergoes care at VA medical centers.

David Ortiz was never afraid of a challenge. He was an avid outdoorsman before he joined the Army and became a Kiowa helicopter pilot in the 82nd Airborne Division’s Combat Aviation Brigade. In Eastern Afghanistan, Kiowa pilots took a lot of risk to protect the guys on the ground, and, in February 2012, David suffered a hard landing that destroyed his aircraft, broke his legs, and inflicted extreme trauma on his spine, throat, and lungs.

Late last summer, the Gaspar Family was in for big changes. The Air Force family of five had been reassigned to Kadena Air Base, Japan where Maj. Ian Gaspar would serve as a pharmacist.Throughout the Fall, Ian, his wife, Kimberly, their two teenagers, Cydney and Noah, and toddler, Gwyndolyn, settled into their new home.
